The three-cylinder engines of the 01.10 series embodied the advancement of the 01 class. Due to the war, only 55 units were built, although the demand was calculated at 400.
The driving qualities of the 01 and 03 classes raised difficulties at higher speeds. For this reason, locomotives with smoother-running three-cylinder engines were procured. While 204 units were initially ordered, only 55 locomotives were built by 1939 due to the war. They received streamlined fairings which were removed after the war.
Tests in 1956 showed that a main firing by oil increased the locomotive's performance appreciably. For this reason, 34 locomotives of this class were rebuilt, including the 01 1061, which was delivered by Schwartzkopff in Berlin in 1939. On June 15, 1975, it pulled a special train across Western Germany to Neuenmarkt before being transferred to the museum on the same day.
