Starting in 1957, the Deutsche Bundesbahn rebuilt some class 01 locomotives. They received welded high-performance steam boilers that had already proven themselves as part of the 01.10 class.
The DB modified a total of 50 class 01 locomotives starting in 1957. In addition to the new boiler, the smokebox received a new mix-preheater and numerous plain bearings were replaced by roller bearings. Other changes to the cylinder block and the circulation, the lower chimney, the now missing feed dome and front spoiler, and the replacement of the sand domes with sand boxes on the inside of the circulation plates gave the locomotives a new look.
Built in 1935 at the Henschel locomotive factory (Kassel), the 01 164 received its new boiler in 1960 and was retired in 1971. Until 1973, it served as a heating locomotive in the Göttingen Aw. It is on private loan at the DDM.
