Historic structure

Getting started
A person is shoveling coal into the boiler of a steam locomotive

To this day, there is a railway line between Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg station and Marktschorgast station which made European railway history at the time of its construction in the years between 1844 and 1848.

It is the first line in Europe where a significant height difference of 158 metres with an incline of 1:40 had to be overcome while being usable without any assistance!

Europe's oldest steep ramp

In order to overcome the side valleys and to follow the slopes, two 1,400 meters long stone walls, which reached heights of up to 32 metres, were built.
Three road bridges and ten railway bridges as well as multiple passages and cascades had to be built between 1844 and 1848 - most of these structures have survived until today without major changes and can easily be reached by following the "Schiefe Ebene" educational trail.
