The class 01 was the first standard locomotive produced in series as part of the 1925 construction program. The 01 111 shows the state of construction of the 1950s with old boilers and Wagner wind deflectors.
After the state railroads were merged to form the Reichsbahn in 1920, the inventory included 210 different types of steam locomotives. This made operation and maintenance very difficult. The solution: standardized locomotives. A total of 231 examples of the class 01 were built between 1926 and 1938. The 01 111 was built in 1934.
From the end of the 1960s, the last exemplars of the 01 were located at the Hof depot in Upper Franconia. Their service on the "Schiefe Ebene" made the track a place of pilgrimage for steam locomotive enthusiasts from all over the world until 1973. The last eight operational machines had the fleet numbers 008, 088, 111, 131, 150, 168, 173 and 180.
