With 105 units made, it was the Deutsche Bahn's most commonly built „Neubaudampflok“ (newly designed steam locomotive). When the last 23s were delivered in 1959, however, the fate of steam traction had long since been sealed.
After World War II, the Deutsche Bahn lacked powerful locomotives for moderate passenger train service and light express train service. New construction principles were developed for the new procurement. The new design fulfilled all expectations (universal application, low coal consumption) and looked tremendously modern.
The 23 019, built by Jung (Jungenthal) in 1952, was initially assigned to the Mainz depot. There, not only passenger and express trains were part of the operational spectrum, but the F 21 "Rheingold" was also temporarily hauled by a 23 from Mainz. In June 1975, 23 019 was taken out of service at the Crailsheim depot.
