In 1848 – only 13 years after the first railway in Germany had been established between Nuremberg and Fürth – the most fascinating section of the 566 kilometer long “Ludwigs-Süd-Nord-Bahn”, which ran from Lindau to Hof, was opened. Between Neuenmarkt and Marktschorgast it had to overcome the “Fränkische Linie”, an imaginary border between the two mountain ranges Fichtelgebirge and Frankenwald with an altitude difference of 160 meters.
There hadn’t been any example for the accomplishment of the incline without using any technical support before. The “Schiefe Ebene” is the prototype for all following mountain railways, such as Semmering, Brenner or Gotthard.
For a distance of about eight kilometers, the nature trail “Schiefe Ebene” connects valley station and mountain station and leads the hikers very close to unique architecture, which enabled the alignment.
The Schiefe-Ebene-Expert imparts in the role of a signalman all the special features of the railway section to the hikers.
