In 1848 – only 13 years after the first railway in Germany had been established between Nuremberg and Fürth – the most fascinating section of the 566 kilometer long “Ludwigs-Süd-Nord-Bahn”, which ran from Lindau to Hof, was opened. Between Neuenmarkt and Marktschorgast it had to overcome the “Fränkische Linie”, an imaginary border between the two mountain ranges Fichtelgebirge and Frankenwald with an altitude difference of 160 meters.
