With its already acquired exhibits and its excellent incorporation into the surrounding historical and functioning railway landscape, the German Steam Locomotive Museum acts as the "Mecca for steam locomotive enthusiasts" in Germany. It provides a way to experience the past, present and future of the railway.

The projects and initiatives are aimed at not only living up to this claim but developing the German Steam Locomotive Museum even further as a specialized museum for steam locomotives in Germany with a European focus. The German Steam Locomotive Museum views itself as a living museum - a competent, interesting and friendly specialized museum for everyone.
