The German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt is sponsored by an administration union consisting of the administrative region of Upper Franconia, the administrative district of Kulmbach and the municipality of Neuenmarkt.
To ensure the future of the museum, which emerged from a private initiative of Günter Knauß in 1977, for Upper Franconia and the region, the administration union assumed the task of equipping the museum in 1984. Since then, the museum's development has been more than positive and it has attracted visitors from far and near.
Each year up to 50,000 visitors testify to the museum's enormous appeal and confirm the successful efforts which the sponsors of the museum have put into its construction and expansion.
The president of the district assembly and the district administrator alternate in functioning as association chairman on a two-year cycle.

The association union "German Steam Locomotive Museum" has defined its goals as ensuring the museum's maintenance, operation and expansion. A special focus is to maintain a vivid railway community and to actively increase the appeal of the institution. Naturally, the means of the association union are directly tied to the limited financial framework.
